History

The VUT FAST Weather Station was founded in 1910 under the name Meteorologická stanice c. k. České techniky Brno (Imperial-Royal Weather Station at the Czech Technology University in Brno). Since 1911 regular observations have been conducted here and since 1912 the station has been included in the national meteorological network as a major observatory. The station is located at the level of the attic and roof space in the building C in the premises of the Faculty of Civil Engineering. Since its establishment, comprehensive measurements of meteorological variables and their evaluation have been systematically conducted at the station. At that time, it was considered a major site in the European meteorological network. In 1951, the station was transferred under the administration of the Military Academy in Brno. Meteorological observations were still maintained at a very high level. According to available information, the first meteorological radar in the Czech Republic was put into operation at the weather station. During the last year before the Army left the premises of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the overall condition and maintenance of the weather station declined. It declined so much that at the time when the Army was leaving the premises the weather station equipment was dismantled and only empty spaces remained. In 1994 and 1995, the Faculty of Civil Engineering, namely the Institute of Landscape Water Management, began to take over the station back. Since then, selected measurements of meteorological variables were restored and modernized into their present condition.

Key dates in the history of the VUT Weather Station

1909 – Beginning of the construction of Building C.
1911 – Start of operation of the VUT weather station under the name Meteorologická stanice c. k. česká technika Brno (Imperial-Royal Weather Station at the Czech Technology University in Brno). Since that year, measurements have been carried out continuously until today.
1918 – Included in the group of 4 professional stations. Milešovka, Prague-Karlov, Weather Station of the Czech Technical University in Brno and Hurbanova.
1951 – The Military Academy took over the buildings.
1994 – Buildings returned to the hands of the Faculty of Civil Engineering.
2005 – Modernization of the equipment, switch to the automated METEOS 5 measurement system.
2015 – Second modernization of the equipment, complete recalibration of measuring equipment. Installation of a new wood Stevenson meteorological booth.

Head of the VUT Weather Station

Dr. Rudolf Schneider – 1909–1910, first head of the Weather Station.
Dr. Jozef Mašek – 1912–1919, first head of the Weather Station.
Dr. Alois Gregor – 1922–1937. A permanent observer, he described the station equipment in detail and processed measurement results.
Doc. Ing. Helena Králová, CSc. – 2005–2014. Under her leadership, the station was modernized. The METEOS 5 measuring system manufactured by MeteoServis Vodňany was installed and it is still operated at the station today.
Ing. Daniel Marton, Ph.D. – 2014 to present.
